Iain Johnston is Waveform’s architectural director and company founder.

Originally from Northumberland, after qualifying as an architect, Iain moved to India to live and work on Louis Kahn’s seminal IIM University campus in the studio office of architect and scholar, Anant Raje. 

Upon return to the UK, Iain moved to London and joined the studio of Tilney Shane, at a time when the practice were pioneering projects in workplace and retail design, working for BA, IBM and the BBC.

Iain then joined another London practice, Bisset Adams, where he stayed for 18 years and became a director and co-owner. During his time at Bisset Adams, Iain led the automotive design team working with leading brands Vauxhall; Volvo; Mazda; Ford; VW; Seat; Skoda; Opel; Honda; Saab; Chevrolet and Cadillac on their retail networks and environments. Iain advised on all aspects of the brand environment, designing and implementing retail concepts which have been rolled out across thousands of sites worldwide. 

Iain was also project director on many significant new-build architectural projects such as the WHG office in Walsall, Idea Store Watney Market, Blackpool Winter Gardens, Birkbeck University Toddler Lab and Southmere Library.

Having set up Waveform in 2020, as well as undertaking bespoke architectural commissions, Iain continues to consult on all matters concerning automotive retail.
